"Thin, sensitive and demanding" – what do you need to know about the skin around the eyes?

The skin around the eyes is one of the most delicate and demanding areas of the face. This is where the first signs of the passage of time, fatigue or allergic reactions most often appear. If you want to effectively take care of the care of this area, you should learn more about its characteristics and needs. From this post you will learn why the care of the skin under the eyes requires a special approach.
Anatomy of the skin around the eyes – a thin barrier of great importance
Skin as thin as parchment – only 0.3-0.5 mm thick
The skin on the eyelids and around the eyes is the the thinnest part on the entire body – Up to four times thinner than, for example, the skin on the cheeks (1 to 2 mm thick). This extreme softness is due to the very thin layer of epidermis and dermis and the almost complete absence of fatty tissue.
What does such a thin skin structure mean?
- Smaller protective barrier – penetration of the substance is easier, but at the same time there is a greater risk of irritation.
- Greater translucency – Translucency of vessels makes shadows under the eyes visible.
- Faster manifestation of changes (e.g., wrinkles, sagging, discoloration).
No sebaceous glands = no natural protection
Unlike other parts of the face, the skin under the eyes has almost no sebaceous glands. Thus, the natural hydrolipid mantle, which normally protects the skin from water loss and harmful external factors, is missing.
Implications?
- Skin is prone to dehydration and tightening sensation.
- Its sensitivity to temperature changes, wind and UV radiation increases.
- Reacts faster to allergens and pollution.
Therefore, it is so important to systematically use creams with moisturizing, regenerating and occlusive (forming a protective layer) properties.
Delicate vessels and lymph – the cause of dark circles and puffiness
Under the skin around the eyes is a dense but very shallow network of blood and lymphatic vessels. The thin structure of the vessels makes it easy to reach:
- Dishes throughputes – Purple or blue shadows,
- Lymphatic stasis – Puffiness and so-called bags under the eyes,
- Irritation and micro-trauma (e.g., with allergies and eye rubbing).
That's why symptoms of fatigue, allergies or sleep deprivation are seen here first!
Skin that never rests – 20,000 blinks a day
The eye area is one of the most active areas of the face – it is estimated that each day we blink 10,000 to 20,000 times! Add to this facial expressions (laughter, anger, surprise), and you will find that the muscles around the eyes are in constant motion.
The results of this activity are:
- Faster formation of facial wrinkles (known as crow's feet),
- Stretching of the skin and loss of firmness,
- Microtrauma and muscle fatigue that can lead to eyelid flaccidity.
Why eye care should be special?
Face cream is not enough – you need dedicated formulas
The skin around the eyes does not tolerate everything that is good for the rest of the face. Classic creams can be:
- Too rich and oily (with high oil content),
- Overloaded with active substances (e.g. retinol, AHA acids),
- Full of fragrance ingredients or preservatives that irritate the eyes.
The skin under the eyes does not have the ability to metabolize and neutralize them effectively, which can lead to irritation, tearing, swelling, burning sensation or contact rash.
This is why specialised eye creams have been developed – light, fragrance-free and dermatologically tested.
Reactive and allergic skin – the biggest skin care challenge
The area around the eye is a common site of allergic reactions – Both contact and atopic. The high reactivity of this zone means that even natural ingredients can cause sensitization. Lack of lipid layer (no barrier) makes it easy for allergens to penetrate the thin epidermis and can enter the conjunctiva of the eye.
Eye creams must be dedicated to this delicate area, so it is worth it:
- Choose hypoallergenic products,
- Avoid fragrances and alcohol,
- Bet on gentle but nourishing active ingredients: for example, caffeine, ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

- Vascular shadows – result from translucent blood vessels, are purple or blue.
- Pigmented shadows – Brown or mixed, associated with melanin deposition.
- Swelling and bags – are most often the result of lymphatic stasis or fatty hernias.
Not all problems, especially the latter, can be solved with care, but effective m.in.: regular lymphatic drainage and care containing active ingredients such as caffeine, antioxidants, ceramides or omega acids.
Wrinkles and sagging – the first signs of aging
Lack of lipids, dehydration and intense facial expressions related to the work of the eye muscles mean that wrinkles around the eyes can appear even in people before 30. year of age. They often require gentle but effective active ingredients.
Helpful in the fight against them will be:
- Caffeine, which eliminates fatigue and puffiness,
- Hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights,
- Antioxidants (vitamin C, E, maritime pine extract),
- Regular use of SPF sunscreen.
