How does hyaluronic acid work?

You can read this text in 4 minutes.

Hyaluronic acid, is one of the most popular moisturizers, and yet, there are still many myths about it. Learn more about this ingredient and take your skin's hydration level to a new level.

Hyaluronic acid is a component present in our body – we have it in our tears, in our knees and even in our skin – but the amount, as we age, decreases. In the beauty industry, it has found a very wide range of applications, both externally and by injection (to contour the face and lips). It is widely associated with hydration and wrinkle filling.

What is hyaluronic acid?

In fact, hyaluronic acid is not an acid... but a sugar. Yes, it is a complex sugar, it belongs to the group of polysaccharides and, importantly, it does not have exfoliating properties, such as alpha-hydroxy acids. It is a highly hygroscopic substance, which means that it binds water. Its molecules can increase their volume up to 1000 times.

Effects of using hyaluronic acid:

  • improving the level of hydration, reducing roughness, or dry skin,
  • tighten and increase the elasticity of the skin,
  • smoothed texture,
  • filling in wrinkles caused by dehydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines,
  • soothing minor irritations and reducing sensitivity,
  • improving the protective function against external factors.

Thanks to the fact that it is not an exfoliating, irritating acid, it can be used daily, even twice a day, also by sensitive, delicate skins, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Types of hyaluronic acid

In addition, it should be noted that hyaluronic acid comes in various forms, and on store shelves you can find products based on this ingredient both for 20 zł and 200 zł. So what is the difference between the two?

Hyaluronic acid can be divided into three basic molecules:

  • high molecular weight,
  • low molecular weight and
  • medium-molecular hyaluronic acid.

High-molecular hyaluronic acid – has very large particles, which do not penetrate deep into the epidermis, but only settle on it, forming the so-called "wet compress" – a film on the surface of the skin, which prevents evaporation of water from the epidermis.

Medium-molecular hyaluronic acid – already has a smaller molecule and penetrates the top layer of the epidermis, binding water there,
low-molecular hyaluronic acid – the smallest molecules that penetrate into the deeper layers of the epidermis, bind and retain water, providing lasting hydration.

A mixture of different molecules that provide hydration improvements at different levels is an excellent solution, but it is still a water-based substance that is difficult for the skin to absorb. Therefore, it is worth investing in products in which the bioavailability of this ingredient has been increased. One such way may be to put hyaluronic acid in capsules. It is also innovative to act at the molecular level and create special complexes with, for example, silicon.

This is because silicon is one of the elements of life:

  • occurs in all body fluids and tissues in the human body,
  • participates in the biosynthesis of collagen, an essential component of connective tissue,
  • strengthens and makes the walls of blood vessels more flexible,
  • reduces capillary permeability,
  • accelerates healing processes,
  • has a sebostatic effect.

The combination of silicon molecule with hyaluronic acid molecule increases its bioavailability, and the effectiveness of raw material with such a complex is confirmed by clinical studies. This is a whole new dimension of hydration and the use of a resource that has been known for years – hyaluronic acid.

Veoli Botanica's latest 3 serum series uses a unique multi-molecular combination of hyaluronic acid taking skin hydration to a new level. 5 molecules of hyaluronic acid forming a three-dimensional mesh, provides multi-level hydration, and the combination of the hyaluronic acid molecule with silicon – the element of life – increases the bioavailability of the molecule, allowing it to reach the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate cell division in the epidermis.

For whom is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid will work well for any skin, especially dry, mature, with the first signs of aging, as well as dehydrated skin. Dehydrated skin does not necessarily mean dry skin, so it is important to distinguish and understand the needs of the skin.

The main skin types are:

  • dry,
  • fat,
  • mixed
  • and normal

And each of them can have simultaneously subtype:

  • vascular,
  • sensitive,
  • whether just dehydrated.

Skin dehydration can accompany any type of skin, so you can have dry and dehydrated skin, as well as oily and dehydrated skin at the same time. In a nutshell, dry skin is deficient in lipids (fats) that protect it (by analogy, oily skin secretes too many). In the case of dehydration – we are talking about too low water levels, which can be caused, for example, by the heating season, or damage to the hydrolipid barrier.

Maintaining the right level of hydration is crucial for any skin type, while in the case of dry skin the symptoms are obvious – dry cuticles, tight skin, discomfort, roughness, so with oily or combination skin lack of hydration in addition to the above-mentioned effects, may be accompanied by an overproduction of sebum. The skin, in an act of defense against the loss of moisture, will begin to secrete more sebum, which not only results in more shine, but also an increased number of imperfections. Sounds familiar?
