How copper peptides work?

You can read this text in 8 minutes.

Peptides are a group of cosmetic raw materials that can take your skincare to a new level, but one of them has recently gained the most notoriety. If you are wondering how copper peptide works and whether choosing this raw material will meet your expectations – read this post to the end!

What are peptides?

Before we go directly to the action of copper peptide, it is worth knowing what the peptides. Taking them apart is not at all as complicated as you may think.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, depending on the source – from two, to as many as fifty amino acids linked together by peptide bonds.

Cosmetics typically use peptides made up of up to ten amino acids. However, chains made up of more than 100 amino acids – are already proteins.

Depending on how large the molecule is and how the amino acids are arranged in the chain, we can get certain properties or functions of the peptides. Therefore, it is not possible to generalize the effect of all peptides, it will vary from group to group:

  • Signal peptides, which are designed to give cells some kind of signal, such as to start collagen synthesis – stimulate fibroblasts, the connective tissue cells found in the dermis, to produce collagen and elastin (this group includes m.in. copper peptides).
  • Transporting, carrier peptides – help transport other ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin, which ultimately increases their effectiveness (copper peptides are also included in this group).
  • Neuropeptides, peptides that are inhibitors of neurotransmitters – a fascinating group of peptides, capable of blocking the action of neurotransmitters, which helps reduce facial tension and reduce the formation of facial wrinkles. These are peptides inspired by the effects of Botox - such as the famous argireline.

So a copper peptide, is a combination of a tripeptide with copper – that is, three amino acids linked by peptide bonds + copper.

glycine (G), histidine (H) and lysine (K), with copper (Cu) – GHK-Cu

Abbreviation GHK-Cu you may already be familiar with, because copper peptide (just GHK-Cu) occurs naturally in the human body, and there are even dietary supplements on the market with this ingredient. Copper is involved in the healing of various micro-injuries to the skin and various repair processes, such as fighting free radicals (which many people associate only with vitamin C), and reducing inflammation.

How copper peptides work?

From the first part of the post, you will surely have already guessed the effect of copper peptides.

  • Remodel the skin – remodel and increase its thickness (and, by the way, are responsible for the degradation of old cells, in whose place new ones are formed). As a result, they reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Stimulate skin repair, improve wound healing and skin barrier function.
  • Reduce scar tissue, such as from acne.
  • They act as an antioxidant, so they perfectly support the morning application of sunscreen.
  • They give the characteristic blue color.

Wrinkle reduction, lifting effect and change in oval and facial shape is possible! It is due to innovative proprietary formulations with copper peptides in pure form and high concentrations, whose effectiveness has been confirmed by an independent testing laboratory.

For whom are copper peptides?

Copper peptides will work well in all skin types – will support various processes. Of course, mature skins and those struggling with the first aging processes are the first to be associated, but not only this group can reach for this cosmetic raw material.

In the context of anti-aging can also be used at the level of prevention by young skins, although the anti-wrinkle effect will be less pronounced here, but of course prevention is better than cure.

It is also an ingredient that is an excellent antioxidant, so it will support the action of the sunscreen throughout the year, enhancing the anti-aging effect.

Copper peptides are also a good alternative for people who do not want or cannot opt for retinoids. On the other hand, for those who have already introduced retinol, or retinal, into their care – the copper peptides will mitigate the negative effects of the retinol process (i.e., the introduction of retinoids into care, which is often accompanied by sensitivity, redness, or dryness) by improving the skin's barrier function.

This ingredient also need not fear extremely sensitive and dry skins. It will integrate perfectly into gentle care, and does not require getting used to it or gradually introducing it. The group of sensitive skins also includes acne-prone complexions, fighting chronic inflammation – this cosmetic substance will also support many treatments and strengthen the delicate skin.

Tips from the expert

Copper peptide can therefore be used as the main cosmetic ingredient in your care, providing you with a stimulating and preventive action, but also as an excellent additive taking care to a higher level.

Remember, however, that it is an extremely capricious ingredient that reacts badly to pH spikes.

To maintain the best level of action, it is advisable to use it alone, covering it with a mild cream that does not contain acids that require low pH or retinoids.
